PostModern Jukebox - Feel It Still #pmjtour York 2024
Tatum Langley, Sarah Potenza & Ashley Campbell at York Barbican 29th April 2024
I don't normally post other people's music on here, but we were encouraged to do so by the MC and it was such a good gig.
If you got here looking for #pmjtour then please don't like or subscribe. I don't normally post things like this and you probably don't like the rest of what I do :)

    Strat is interesting--picked up a Fernandes Retrorocket Elite (strat style) with the sustainer and two sets of SD Hot Rails, and also have a Vega Trem and Sperzel locking tuners on it. I used it in a show recently and have found it easy to use and worked well. Thanks for the vid.

    Been on a journey with these things, had the Fender EOB, a couple of Fernandes Retrorocket Elites and a Fernandes Revolver Classic. The EOB wasn't the best, the back pickup just hasn't got enough beans to work with the driver, the Fernandes guitars are far superior particularly the Revolver Classic, it has a Duncan Coolrails in the middle and Duncan Distortion full size humbucker in the bridge, they sound superb on their own and the quackiest quack I have ever heard when used together, and don't get fooled by the name Duncan Distortion, it will do the clean stuff if required as well as the heavy crunch

    muting the strings you don't want to ring out is a common practise on an electric guitar. otherwise any sufficiently loud amp would turn your performance into mush.

    With the level of technology of today, I still wonder why they haven't found a way to power these sustainers from an XLR cable providing 48volts DC from any console. It doesn't have to carry any sound, just the voltage is enough.

    • @ChrissieCaulfield
      @ChrissieCaulfield Місяць тому

      I have no idea tbh. But some conjectures. a) Guitarists like jack cables, b) lots of guitars use 9v batteries for other electronics so it's not a big deal to many people (all my violins have active pickups) and c) maybe the 48v doesn't carry enough current to power a sustainer - microphones don'e use a lot, but sustainers do use a lot of battery. Just ideas :)

      @ChrissieCaulfield 2 місяці тому

      Thanks! I'm not very familiar with the SY-200, but looking at the specs it seems VERY cut-down from the SY-300. For instance it only has one 'oscillator' and (i'm not sure about this) no sequencer. So I think you might struggle to get anything as handy as I managed in this video. That doesn't mean it's impossible (AFAIK nobody else thought of doing this with a SY-300 before!) but from reading the specs it looks, at best, very hard.

    • @ChrissieCaulfield
      @ChrissieCaulfield 4 місяці тому

      It depends which "Fernandes" pickupo you mean. The bridge pickup is a humbucker and the neck pickup is a single coil. When the sustainer is on, then the bridge (humbucker) pickup is automatically selected (regardless of the blade switch position). When the sustainer is off the the pickup selected by the blade switch is active. I hope this clears things up.

      That's a a really good point and one that I haven't checked. I am using a Fishman battery pack on my Fernandes sustainer guitars and that seems pretty quiet - but, of course, it's designed for guitar use!

    • @emulgatorx
      @emulgatorx 3 місяці тому

      @@ChrissieCaulfield I'm planning on a guitar build using the Fishman battery pack and a Fernandes Sustainer Kit. I was a little concerned that the battery voltage was insufficient because people have measured only about 4.5V on these despite Fishman claiming it was "like a 9V battery" which seems to be very carefully worded. So you didn't have any issues with it? How long does the battery last?

    Great vid, i already have the fernandes one, which one that you think have a better neck pickup tone? Mine seems dull and lifeless as a neck pickup

    • @ChrissieCaulfield
      @ChrissieCaulfield 5 місяців тому

      I think the Sustainiac is a marginally better neck pickup (if you can stomach the extra noise from it), but there isn't much in it, and it's hard to draw firm conclusions with the guitars being so different in sound anyway. I now also have a Fernandes in a PRS/SE Custom 24 (with another pickup in the 'spare' slot as promised!) and can confirm that the neck is the least-good pickup of the three - especially compared with the PRS bridge, which I really like. I don't think I would describe either as "dull and lifeless" tbh, but they are not the best. I suppose it's a compromise with it having to do sustaining duties too. I find it usable - though I don't use it a lot. If I want a single-coil neck for recording I tend to reach for an unmodified Strat :)

    Great vid thanks. Have you tried the gr55 against the sy1000? It doesn’t look as though the sy can stack 3 sounds at the same time and the available sounds seem less than on the GR55. All very confusing. Thanks

    • @ChrissieCaulfield
      @ChrissieCaulfield 7 місяців тому

      Thanks. The SY-1000 can layer 3 sounds (over the instrument signal), but they are all synth sounds - there are no samples in there. That's the main difference between that and the GR-55 (apart from the better connectivity on the back, like extra pedals and a send/return loop). It's a question of what you really want to do with it - I'm not that bothered about making a guitar or violin sound like another instrument, so the synth sounds are more interesting to me. It's a question of what you want really. Also the GR-55 feels quite old-fashioned in it's interface :)

    • @ChrissieCaulfield
      @ChrissieCaulfield Рік тому

      Thanks!. I'm using the 8->13 pin GK cable with the Cantini - it's needed to get the extra sounds from the unit. It's not a MIDI cable though - as I explain here ua-cam.com/video/ZIXWjsC2pGc/v-deo.html it can only be connected to a GR-55 or SY-1000. If you want MIDI you need to one of use those units to convert the violin/guitar signal. And with a violin it does not work very well! So, with a Cantini violin you definitely need a GR-55 or SY-1000 and you're largely restricted to what those devices will do.

With a bit of work it might be possible to get something that sounds vaguely like a trumpet, but it does also depend on what sounds you're putting into to (as it uses resynthesis rather than pitch detection). If you really want other instrument sounds then you might be better looking at a pitch-to-MIDI device
